Novak Djokovic’s fan Tomas Etcheverry moves closer to playing his idol as he enters the Top 100 for the first time
Tomas tracks his ATP points in comparison to the gap with Djokovic, hoping to catch up with sometime in the future
Argentine player, Tomas Etcheverry, turned pro in 2017 and made his ATP main draw debut just two years ago. Since then, he has won three ATP Challenger and five ITF singles titles. Etcheverry has also won titles in doubles. The player has kept track of his ATP Tour points since winning his first-ever match in 2016.
The Argentine is currently ranked No.61 in the ATP rankings. Since his debut, he has kept track of progress compared to World No.1 Novak Djokovic. Djokovic is ranked at the top with 7160 points at the moment. After reaching the 2023 Chile Open finals, Etcheverry is definitely edging much closer to the Serb.
Tomas’ determination to succeed is apparent as he competed in his maiden ATP Tour final after turning professional. Last year, after breaking into the Top 100 rankings for the first time, Etcheverry had jokingly written up his point gap in relation to Djokovic yet again. His progress is clear as he is gradually moving up the ranks.
It is evident in the way he has fared so far in the 2023 season. Tomas accomplished his first-ever Grand Slam win at the Australian Open in the first round. Moreover, in the Argentina Open, he managed to enter his maiden ATP quarter-finals. Most recently, the Argentine earned 822 points and rose in the rankings after losing to home-favourite Nicolas Jarry in Santiago.
Nicolas Jarry defeats Tomas Etcheverry to clinch the Chile Open title
Sunday’s Chile Open final saw home favorite Nicolas Jarry defeat Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-2 to win his first ATP championship since 2019. Etcheverry also performed admirably, but Jarry’s outstanding tennis ultimately won the match. After almost three hours of exciting tennis, Jarry ultimately rejoiced.
The duo had encountered each other only once before the final. They played against each other at the Cordoba Open last year. Unlike Santiago, Tomas came out on top last year. In front of a cheering home audience who supported him the entire time, the Chilean ultimately won the ATP 250 final.
Jarry will go up 100 spots to No. 52 in the ATP Rankings after winning the title at home and making it to the semi-finals last week in Rio de Janeiro. On the other hand, Etcheverry will reach No.61, his highest ranking ever.
