It has been a roller-coaster ride this season for Novak Djokovic. The Serb won three major Grand Slams, the Australian Open, French Open, US Open, and the ATP Finals besides reaching the finals of the Wimbledon.
However, Nole couldn’t finish the season high as he was eliminated from the semis of the Davis Cup. Nole started off brightly winning the quarter-finals with a dominating performance over Great Britain.
Things were looking pretty good for Nole and Serbia, and at that time, only a few would bet against them. However, Jannik Sinner had other plans. The World No. 4 defeated Djokovic in a must-win match for Italy to keep their hopes alive. Then came the decisive doubles, and Sinner teamed up with Lorenzo Sonego to beat Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic.
However, things became heated over the Internet after the nominees for the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award were announced, and there was no mention of Djokovic in it.
The nominees are Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Hubert Hurkacz, and Grigor Dimitrov. The 24-time Grand Slam title champion couldn’t find a place on the nominee list. Nole’s place is all over the internet, calling it a targeted omission.
Fans question the ATP over the selection of Alcaraz over Novak Djokovic for the sportsmanship award
After the list of nominees was announced by the ATP, there has been absolute carnage regarding this unfair treatment of Nole by the ATP. Fans have called out ATP as a propagandist for repeatedly excluding the name Nole from such award lists.
Moreover, the selection of Alcaraz over Nole was a surprising one. Regarding this, one of the videos also surfaced on the internet. In the video, Alcaraz cut his hand after bottling a 4-2 lead in the Cincinnati Finals against Nole.
Whatever it may be, cutting one’s hands just for bottling a lead can never be a good show of sportsmanship. Keeping aside, Nole’s performances this year have been phenomenal.
Moreover, the Serb is never seen throwing away ill-treatment to his opponents. Even after the defeats against Alcaraz and Sinner, the Serb was in high praise for either of them. If this doesn’t earn you a name, at least in the nominees list, we wonder what’ll.
Djokovic’s coach, Goran Ivanisevic, earned a nomination for the ATP Coach of the Year, but Nole was excluded from the list. His fans have stated that these types of treatments make Nole stronger and more motivated. After such a superb season this year, his fans would hope that he comes back with the same momentum next season with the dream of winning the Golden Slam.
