Novak Djokovic’s father, Srdjan Djokovic, is being ridiculed in the tennis community for his controversial take on the Serbian legend’s future. During an interview for Sportal’s documentary titled ‘Novak Djokovic – Untold Stories’, he stated that he wishes Djokovic retires in 2024 after the Paris Olympics.
“As far as my wishes for him go, he has already fulfilled them all seven-eight years ago. The rest is this amazing bonus. Tennis is only one segment of his life, not his whole life, I expect him to be recognized for the things he will do after his career ends as well, after he leaves the tennis world, which I hope it will happen next year,” Mr. Djokovic said.
He explained his comment, saying, “My wish as a father – I think for some time that he should have stopped working this extremely difficult job. It’s physically and mentally challenging and very demanding – with him being fully dedicated for 30 years, and not taking his foot off the gas, there is not much time for other things in life.”
His comments, in hindsight, make it clear that his only intention in wishing for his son’s retirement was that he should now spend more time with family and perhaps ease the pressure of playing at the top of the tennis world for close to 17 years.
Novak’s mother, Dijana believes that he has achieved everything there is to achieve on the tennis tour. “It’s all up to him. As far as I’m concerned, he can retire right now – he has won everything,” she said.
Fans on Twitter ridiculed Srdjan Djokovic for his outrageous take on Novak’s career
Tennis fans took to social media to criticize Srdjan’s comment. Novak Djokovic is amongst the fittest athletes on tour and in peak form. They believe that it would make no sense for Novak to retire at this stage when he clearly still has the drive to compete on tour.
Most fans agree that 2024 is just too soon for the Serbian legend to hang his tennis racket. They believe that as long he has the drive the compete and is in contention for titles, nothing should stop Djokovic from continuing to compete on the tour.
