Back in 2022, when COVID-19 was at its peak, Novak Djokovic was at the centre of one of the biggest controversies of his career when he had refused to take the vaccine for the virus. The entire tennis community was against him back then apart from a few fans who showed their support.
It started ahead of the 2022 Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season and they had issued a strong statement against the Serb threatening to deny participation in the competition if he did not get vaccinated. However, Novak stuck to his ground and decided not to comply. As a result, he had to miss out on the Australian Open, BNP Paribas Open, US Open and Miami Open in 2022 along with Miami Open and Indian Wells in 2023.
“I was never against vaccination. But I’ve always supported the freedom to choose what you put in your body,” Novak Djokovic said about his stance in a BBC interview. “Because the principles of decision-making in my body are more important than any title or anything else. I’m trying to be in tune with my body as much as I possibly can,” he said.
After his 2023 US Open victory, Novak Djokovic said that he does not regret his decision of not taking the vaccination back in 2022.
“I don’t want to do that. I also don’t want to live too much in the future. I want to be as much as in the present moment but of course, think about future, create a better future,” Djokovic added.

Novak Djokovic wrote history as he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final of the 2023 US Open to win the 24th Grand Slam of his career. He has now established himself as the greatest tennis player in the history of the game, as he is way ahead of anyone else in numbers.
After this win, fans all over the world have called this comeback a ‘poetic justice’ as he slapped the people who had banned him for his no compulsion of vaccination stance back in 2022.
