Ons Jabeur‘s start to the 2023 season has not been disappointing. Disappointing not only for her fans but also for herself. Jabeur had a big 2022 season where she reached two Major finals. She finished as the World No. 2, but injuries have crippled her this season.

After her early exit from the 2023 Australian Open, Jabeur was out of action for 6-7 weeks. She returned from injury at the 2023 Indian Wells Open. She, however, failed to go past the third round. Her absence from the Tour has seen her drop down to World No. 5. But the Tunisian is not sulking over the drop and is rather motivated to be back to her best.

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek‘s heroics in the last season have kept her at the top. Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina have been bringing the heat on the Tour this season. They shared the court in the Australian Open finals before Sabalenka won. As Jabeur enters the 2023 Miami Open, she spoke about her plans to topple the current Top-3 in Race to WTA Finals.

“Elena won Wimbledon last year. Aryna struggled a bit last year but she regained her confidence. Iga is Iga. I think they have a very powerful game so that’s why it’s great to see them doing amazing I think it’s great motivation for all of us. I know what great players they are and I think it’s fun to challenge them a bit, I have a completely different game from them so maybe it’s time that I make trouble for them a little bit,” said Jabeur speaking with the press in Miami.

Moving into the 2023 Miami Open, Ons Jabeur is the fourth seed and starts her campaign against Varvara Gracheva. All eyes are however on her fitness level as the Clay season is about to start. Jabeur won her one and only WTA-1000 title at the 2022 Madrid Open. Her good track record on the red soil makes her a title contender on the surface.

“Brain and body feel good. I feel like I’m ready here for Miami. The body is getting there, and I’m really excited. he tennis is there, I just need to gain back some of the things I was doing before. I also feel my tennis is getting better, just with the technical things that I’ve been working on with my coach. I feel like this season is just starting now. This is my January,” said an optimistic Jabeur ahead of her first-round match.

Jabeur also spoke about her ambition for the rest of the season. The Tunisian revealed a full season is the only goal as of now. She was humble enough to admit not everyone is fully fit at all times and she has to pull through this to fight this season.

“We’re trying to do that, to listen to my body and not push too much. I also have a physio with me who can help me with stuff. Everybody plays with an injury. You just need to maintain a certain level to play good tennis and have a full schedule. I think I always put pressure on myself to always do better, but it’s a good pressure you know, not the kind that will drive me crazy. For now, I think I am just trying to enjoy and get back to my game because I think that is very important to me,” added Jabeur.
