‘Osaka finished?’ Amanda Anisimova knocks Naomi Osaka out in the first round of the 2022 French Open

Amanda Anisimova and Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka’s woes on clay continue as she loses her opening match at the 2022 French Open to former semifinalist and 27th seed Amanda Anisimova in the first round. Anisimova defeated the Japanese in straight sets 7-5,6-4 to survive a very tough opening round encounter.

All eyes were on Osaka given the chaos around her last year at the French Open but she didn’t manage to turn things in the right direction this time around. She was coming with not much game time on clay and it was reflected in her game. She didn’t play badly at all but Anisimova was hitting the ball very cleanly from the baseline and forced Osaka to be a sitting duck.

Both players looked very nervous on serve at the start and hence the match started with 3 breaks of serve. Anisimova was taking charge from the baseline but Osaka was defensively very solid. Despite being a break down, she came back to take the lead only to bottle things in the end. She got broken due to her own mistakes on serve and lost the set 5-7.

The American was very strong on the backhand and produced some incredible winners. She was adamant about taking charge and played aggressive tennis. After a few solid exchanges, she got the much-needed break and consolidated it to win the set 6-4. This was her second straight victory over Osaka at a grand slam stage. She had earlier beaten the 4-time major champion in Melbourne earlier this year.
