Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, has advanced to his record 16th Roland Garros quarterfinal, and he could face a familiar rival over the net next: Rafael Nadal. Djokovic recovered fast from a minor hiccup in the second set to beat Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 at Court Suzanne Lenglen on Sunday.
Nonetheless, in his post-match press conference, Djokovic expanded on the scheduling issue with Rafael Nadal that he mentioned earlier. In a recent interview, the Serbian superstar was asked if he would like to play Nadal during the day or at night. He said, “All I’ll say is Rafa and I might make totally different requests.”
“I like my chances whoever comes”- Novak Djokovic
However, after his win against Diego Schwartzman, the Serb stated, “As top players, we do have requests, but those requests are not always accepted. The tournament director, with TV, broadcasters, that’s who decides. You know, TV, whether they want your match, day or night. “
He also went on to elaborate more on his potential clash against Rafael Nadal, who is now playing Felix Auger-Aliassime to book a place in the quarter-finals. “It (match against Nadal) is an anticipated match for a lot of people, I am glad because I didn’t spend too much time on the court, because it will be physical. I am ready, I like my chances whoever comes, ” added Novak Djokovic.
He concluded his statement by appreciating the youngster Felix Auger-Aliassime. In his words, “(Felix is) one of the hardest working guys on the Tour and a nice guy. He looks to improve every day, he improved on clay as well. We played very close two sets in Rome, I was surprised with his accuracy on serve. Can play flat and spin.”
