Greek tennis star Maria Sakkariwill be up against the second-seeded Jessica Pegulain a semifinal clash at the 2023 Japan Open. It is going to be a great battle between two of the top stars of the tournament. Sakkari has beaten the likes of Misaki Doi and the fifth-seeded Caroline Garcia.
Pegula, on the other hand, has also looked really sound and solid en route to the semis, beating the likes of Cristina Bucsa and sixth-seeded Daria Kasatkina to set up a great semi-final with Sakkari.
Fourth seed Maria Sakkari did not have the right results up until the recently played Guadalajara Open. She made it to the semi-finals and finals for most of the tournament but failed considerably in the crucial matches. In terms of personal accomplishments, she has had a very disappointing year in most parts of the season with semi-final finishes at the Linz Open, the Qatar Open, the Indian Wells Masters, the Berlin Grass Court Championships, the Citi Open, and the Madrid Open. She finally lifted her first title of the year by beating Caroline Dolehide in the finals of the Guadalajara Open last week.
In the ongoing Tokyo Open, Sakkari has beaten Storm Hunter in the first round by 6-3, 6-1, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win over Caroline Garcia in the second round to set up a great semi-final matchup against Pegula.
On the other hand, Jessica Pegula had a very bad last season due to her mental problems. Her mother was ill for most part of the last season which kept her well off from her best form. But she started the season with a bang with a quarter-final finish at the Australian Open and a finals finish at the Qatar Open losing to Victoria Azarenka. Other than that she also made it to the semi-finals of the Miami Open, Dubai Tennis Championships, Charleston Open, and Citi Open with her first title this year coming at the Canadian Open.
At the ongoing Tokyo Open, Pegula beat Cristina Bucsa in the first-round encounter by 6-1, 6-2 and then went on to beat sixth-seeded Daria Kasatkina by a scoreline of 6-1, 6-0 taking herself just two places away from the silverware.
