Cruising through the quarterfinals, Alexander Zverev defeated undisputable Carlos Alcaraz in a stunning victory. Placing himself in the semis, the German will now face Daniil Medvedev to secure a post in the final showdown. His stellar victory granted him multiple praises from fans and experts alike. Among them was Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.
What Mouratoglou would have thought to be a normal praise for the German turned out to be a bad luck for the former coach. Mourtoglou tweeted,
If I had to choose one word to define Alex Zverev it would be: Resilient.
The tweet did not sit right with many as Zverev has been facing allegations for domestic violence.
The German has been found guilty of physically harassing his former girlfriends Brenda Patea and Olga Sharipova. He was imposed of a penalty of around €450,000 by the Berlin public prosecutor.
Brenda Patea has long accused him of physical aggressiveness, and the court’s decision supports her claims. According to German law, Zverev will only be declared a criminal if he fails to pay the prescribed amount for longer than 90 days.
On top of this, Zverev has been elected in the ATP players’ Council which has stirred more drama. At a time like this, Mouratoglou’s tweet is facing all the backlash, for the right reason or wrong, that the fans have to decide.
X users slam Mourtoglou for his support to Alexander Zverev
The moment Mouratoglou tweeted the statement, there were many who agreed to his tweet. But a large number of tennis fans got on top of the former Williams’ coach for siding with the German at a sensitive time like this.
Check out some of the reactions on Mouratoglou’s tweet:
While his personal life continues to make news, the biggest concern for Zverev now would be the blood blisters he suffered on his feed during the riveting fourth set against Alcaraz. That was the same blister he suffered when Dominic Thiem defeated him in the semifinals of the 2020 Australian Open.
