World No. 7 Holger Rune has reached out to former coach Patrick Mouratoglou to join his camp for a full-time role. The two had initially collaborated for a short period of six months late in the 2022 season. They joined hands in October 2022 and separated in April 2023.
Despite two titles from three finals, including Rune’s maiden Masters title in Paris Bercy, the Dane didn’t extend his deal with the French coach. It was later revealed by Rune’s mother, Aneke, that there were ego clashes between Mouratoglou and other coaches of Rune.

Since then, the 20-year-old has experimented with a couple of big names, but nothing fruitful has come out. This included German great Boris Becker and also Severin Luthi, famous for having coached Roger Federer in his final years on the Tour.
Luthi was let go by Rune in January after his second-round exit at the 2024 Australian Open. Becker also quit the team a few days later, explaining his shocking decision. Amid this, the youngster felt it was right to bring back his old coach. The decision was announced yesterday, February 21st, via social media.
At a very young age, Holger has already achieved great results and become a household name and one of the best tennis players in the world. It shows to me that Holger is one-of-a-kind, and I am thrilled to assist Holger in reaching his goal of becoming the best tennis player in the world.Said Mouratoglou as posted in Aneke Rune’s Instagram story.
Crucial months await Holger Rune in the coming days
With 3700 ranking points to his name at the moment, Rune is in a tight spot in the ATP rankings. He is just 550 points off 10th-ranked Taylor Fritz. Ahead of him is Alexander Zverev in the sixth spot with 5030 points.

Going into the Golden Swing, Rune is defending 2710 points up to Wimbledon. The big results before the championships are in Acapulco (semi-finals), Monte Carlo (finals), Munich (championship), Rome (finals), the French Open (quarter-finals), Queen’s Club (semi-finals), and Wimbledon (quarter-finals).
The Dane will need to be at his absolute best at these events to retain the maximum possible points and remain inside the Top-10. Following the conclusion of the championships at the All-England Club, he has only 645 points to defend till the end of the season, allowing him to be free of pressure concerning his ranking.
Following his second-round exit in Rotterdam last week, the former World No. 4 will now play at the 2024 Acapulco Open, the ATP-500 event in Mexico.
