Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios explained his last-minute decision to pull out of the United Cup event. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist admitted that the Australian Open remained his priority and that he wanted to give his best in the season’s first Slam. With his explanations, Kyrgios has cleared some air around the issue.
In a surprise to every tennis fan, Kyrgios announced his withdrawal from the event minutes before the pre-event press conference. Kyrgios was expected to lead the Australian team in the inaugural mixed doubles event. But his decision shattered the fans’ expectations.
“Winning a match at a grand slam level is not an easy task,” Kyrgios told The Age. “People underestimate the pressure and the nerves with being a part of one of the biggest tournaments of the year,” he further added.
Kyrgios talked about the importance of being physically fit going into any tournament.” Throw in an injury and knowing you didn’t give yourself the best chance only adds to the mountain of pressure you face. So feeling good physically is important,” he elaborated on his point.
Kyrgios also made it clear that he informed Tennis Australia head Craig Tiley and United Cup tournament director Stephen Farrow of his potential withdrawal. “We all worked together to try and get the best outcome,” Kyrgios said.

The 27-year-old decision to pull out from the United Open following the ankle injury met with a lot of criticism. But in the end, Kyrgios got support from tournament director Stephen Farrow and Tennis Australian boss Craig Tiley. They both insisted that there was no reason to doubt Kyrgios with his injury.
“He was here yesterday to hang out. I spoke to him. The fact that this announcement arrived late shows how much he wanted to play. He waited until the last possible moment to confirm whether he was able to compete or not,” Farrow said.
Before his withdrawal, Kyrgios was very excited to represent Australia in the event. After his plans to play in the event are dashed, Kyrgios is planning to get totally fit for the Australian Open which starts on January 16th.
