Petra Kvitova speaks about her marriage to longtime boyfriend and coach Jiri Vanek in an interview with iSport.cz. Kvitova talked about her relationship after winning the first round of the US Open against Cristina Bucsa, 6-1, 7-6 (5). This is her third tournament since tying the knot in July. 

The Czech player revealed that she would continue to play under her maiden name. She further remarked that it wasn’t worth changing, as no one would remember it anyway. “Of course, I will remain Kvitova,” she said. “It’s not even worth changing; no one will remember it anyway.”

The 33-year-old dished out about her life post-marriage. She said that the first few days after marriage felt unusual and strange. It took her some time to get used to it. Kvitova described her wedding as a “beautiful day” where everyone celebrated with them. She recalled that the weather also held out, and all in all, it was an amazing day.

She said, “The wedding day was amazing; I’m sure everyone enjoyed it with us. Really great; even the weather held out for us. A beautiful day. The world No. 11 stated that she just let things happen, and during the tournaments she didn’t have the thoughts or the capacity to get married. However, later in the night, she joked that Jirka was counting down his freedom.

Petra Kvitova on playing against Caroline Wozniacki at the US Open

Petra Kvitova has advanced to the second round of the US Open. Her next match is against former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. Wozniacki returned to the sport after a three-year hiatus earlier this month.

Kvitova praised the Dane for making a comeback after giving birth to two children. She further added that they had known each other for a long time.

They met in the dressing room in Montreal and had a good conversation. The former world No. 2 also expressed that it never truly felt like she was gone, as she was seen commentating on TV. The players will face each other for the 15th time to continue their well-established rivalry. Kvitova has a slight edge over Wozniacki as she leads their head-to-head match 8-6.
