Current World No. 11 and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova offered her words of appreciation for wild card entrant Caroline Wozniacki at the ongoing US Open. This was succeeding the match where the Dane defeated her with a score of 5-7, 6-7. “It was like she never went away,” she said, referring to Wozniacki’s hiatus from professional tennis. Both players have met on the court multiple times before this, where the odds were equally balanced between the two.
The Czech resorted to Twitter (now called X) to make her comments. She established her great appreciation and respect for the former World No.1. Kvitova revealed that Wozniacki’s game was at such a high level that it would never seem that the latter had taken a break and was on the road to a comeback. Wozniacki was awarded a wild card entry, along with Venus Williams and several other players, which gave her a direct route to the first round of the Grand Slam.
Proceeding her message to Wozniacki, Kvitova also acknowledged her unfortunate turn of events at Flushing Meadows. She disclosed that it “wasn’t the happiest of US swings for her.” The current World No.11 also said that this experience was something she would take in stride. She was hopeful that she could take this match with the best intentions and learn the most out of it. However, her best finish at the US Open has only been a quarter-final finish in 2015 and 2017.
Wozniacki retired from professional tennis following a third-round upset at the Australian Open, where she holds her one and only Grand Slam title. The former Australian Open champion and World No.1 then switched career paths to become an ESPN commentator in her post-tennis years.
However, she surprised the tennis world by announcing a comeback with the Canadian Open 2023. She started taking part in the tournament in hopes of getting back to fighting condition for the US Open. She has also revealed that she would like to play at the Paris Olympics in the Mixed Doubles event, partnering up with fellow Dane, Holger Rune.
Caroline Wozniacki advances to the third round of US Open
Former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki marches past Petra Kvitova to reach the third round of the US Open. Wozniacki took a hiatus in 2020 and the 2023 season has seen her return to professional tennis.
In a thrilling match against the 11th-seeded Kvitova, Wozniacki came out with flying colors. Though both players played their best tennis, it was the Dane who ultimately emerged successful.
Wozniacki will face American Jennifer Brady in the third round at American Major. The match will occur at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Dane will hope to proceed on her campaign to clasp another Grand Slam title.
