Cameron Norrie warns that some top players might not play after ATP strips ranking points for Wimbledon 2022

Cameron Norrie

World No. 11 and the highest-ranked British player in the ATP rankings, Cameron Norrie has finally broken his silence over the latest decision of ATP and WTA to strip the 2022 Wimbledon Championships of all of its ranking points it will offer as the LTA and the Grand Slam refuse to allow Russian and Belarusian players to participate.

The decision will ensure that even if the players from the two nations are not allowed to play, they will not lose the opportunity to win points this year, as the Grand Slams are worth 2000 points. However, all the ranking points of the 2021 edition will be lost and the rankings will be affected by it accordingly.

While the decision was expected given multiple reports coming about the same, it was surely surprising as it was a bold move by the ATP to make such a damaging impact on a Grand Slam. Norrie however has come out with further shocking details as he becomes one of the few players and one of the first British players to speak about the entire episode.

“Wimbledon is still such a special event. But I think you’ll see top players not playing, just resting and getting ready for the hardcourt events. Especially those that don’t worry too much about the money. So I could see a lot of players, well maybe a few top players, not playing because of that. It’s an extremely difficult situation with everything going on with the war, but for me, it’s tough – having a home slam and not gaining any ranking points from that. You’re not really playing for anything.

“You’re playing this almost like an exhibition so for me, it was tough to see there are not many tournaments on the grass already, and then suddenly there’s no there are no points at Wimbledon. This changes the ranking system a lot. Players did not have much choice or information. I put my opinion forward to the council, I don’t know if it meant anything,” said Norrie as reported by DailyMail UK.

While there have been no withdrawals yet as the players remain busy with the 2022 French Open, it is likely that players do indeed skip the Wimbledon this year as it is nothing but a high paying exhibition event and given the slipping and injuries at the Championships last year, players would look to stay fit for the hardcourt season that will be the preparation for the 2022 US Open that looks certain to offer the points.
