The WTA is all set to bring back a tournament after half a century. In one of the biggest revivals in tennis, the organization is set to get back a pre-Wimbledon tournament that had run well in the earlier generation.
The Queen’s Club, a pre-Wimbledon tournament was played as a 500 tournament. However, after 1971, it only became an ATP 500 event. Almost half a century later, there are talks about bringing back this tournament.
If things fall into place, this WTA event will be played a week after the French Open, marking the start of the grass season. Although there has been no final decision taken, according to the BBC, the All England Club and the LTA are keen on bringing back this tournament to London.
The LTA and the All England Club have been reviewing the grass court season with the intention of improving the experience for fans and players.Said LTA in a recent interview.
This move is taken in hopes of boosting the visibility and profile of the women’s game. Although there are tournaments like the Eastbourne International, the organizers are keen on bringing back the old tournament. If all the respective parties can be persuaded, then the new schedule may feature another tournament on the WTA list for 2025.
Eastbourne International is in trouble as the organizers talk about bringing back the Queen’s Club
The LTA and the All England Club are working together to bring back the WTA Queen’s Club event. Known as the pre-Wimbledon tournament, it attracts some players to gain momentum ahead of the all-exciting Wimbledon.
However, one problem the organizers may face is the presence of another WTA event, the Eastbourne event. This is also another tournament that is right before Wimbledon and is likely to get downgraded to a WTA 250 event if the Queen’s Club is back.
At the time of writing, no official news is out yet, but there are high chances to see another tournament added to the tennis calendar. However, this may cause changes to the events held in Nottingham and Birmingham, as the future remains uncertain for the other tournaments.
Many WTA players usually take a gap after the French Open, causing less entry to the tournaments right after, but with the addition of the Queen’s Club, many more players are sure to join, given that it is a pre-Wimbledon tournament and not much travel is also required.
