Billie Jean King, Coco Gauff

World No. 23 Coco Gauff is through to her second quarter-final appearance at the Stade Roland Garros as she defeated Elise Mertens in the fourth round of the 2022 French Open. The Belgian had no answer to the American teenager who demolished her completely in the second set to take the match 6-4, 6-0 in 1 hour and 24 minutes with the second set won in just 25 minutes.

The first set was tightly contested and it all came down to the breakpoints as Coco won 6 of the 11 breakpoint opportunities while Elise who had just 4 chances to break capitalised only on two of them. Elise also had 25 unforced errors to Coco’s 17 with the American combining it with 19 winners to the Belgian’s 15 winners. Gauff also had a fantastic game at the net with 17 net points won from the 20 she went for while Elise won just 9 of the 19 net points.

“I knew it was going to be a tough match, last time we played it was three sets and hnestly today I was just trying to enjoy the moment. there were some tough moments in the first set and I fought them. Honestly, thanks to the amazing designers at New Balance, everytime I step on the court, I try to do something fun and today was I don’t know, ballerina and I fell a couple of times on the court so I think that goes with me being a bad dancer.

“Graduating high school, was a big accomplishment for me and I am glad that it is over and it was definitely hard doing school and Tour and I am glad. I am proud more of that than some of my on-court accomplishments cause I know how difficult it was to do it. I don’t know who said the quote, ‘Pressure is privilege’ and I am glad that people expect big things from me.

“I just want to enjoy, I used to focus too much on results and I think that this Slam I am having the most fun I ever did in a tournament. I just want to say thanks to you guys, loved playing on this court, thank you so much,” concluded Gauff during her on-court interview taken by Marion Bartoli.
