In 1999, the Duchess of Kent Katharine and the Duke of Kent Edward attended the Wimbledon Championships and requested to bring the teenage son of a friend. But Wimbledon authorities had to refuse them for the reason that other than the children of the royal family, no other children are allowed a sit at the Royal Box.
For this refusal, the then Club Chairman John Currey issued a statement of apologies to the royal family. Curry explained the situation to them citing the rule of Wimbledon which they have to abide.
“I regret any unintentional hurt this may have caused to her royal highness. As happens every year with all our royal guests, I reconfirmed our guidelines concerning the invitation of additional guests and the subject of children,” Curry had said at that time (as per The Guardian). He then explained that due to huge demands, apart from the children of the royal family, no other children are allowed to be present at the Royal Box.

Why Prince George will be allowed at Wimbledon 2023 without any problems?
Prince George, who is the son of Duchess of Wales Kate Middleton and Prince of Wales William, marked his attendance at the SW19 along with his parents for the first time in 2022. He was eight years at that time and watched the men’s final between Novak Djokovic and Australia’s Nick Kyrgios.
Prince George was not stopped by the Wimbledon authorities from sitting at the Royal Box, the reason was his being a child of the royal family. This makes him an exception to the rule of Wimbledon. If Prince George wants to attend this year’s Wimbledon which is underway currently, he won’t be stopped by the authorities.
At the All England Club, Prince George also met Djokovic who won the tournament in Men’s Singles. Before meeting World No.2, he was even asked who his favorite player his. Prince William had to answer due to his son’s shyness that Djokovic is his favorite player.
Meanwhile, last year Prince George wore a suit and tie on a hot day and reportedly told his father that he was “too hot“. But he had to wear the suit due to Wimbledon’s strict dress code.
According to Wimbledon’s website, sitting at the front row of the Royal Box means men have to wear “suits/jacket and tie”. Even Prince William had to wear a suit when he attended Wimbledon for the first time with his mother, the late Princess Diana back in 1991.
