The entire tennis world is buzzing with excitement ahead of the ‘Netflix Slam‘. The match is scheduled between Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in what will be their first exhibition clash.
The two Spaniards have immense popularity all over the world and the OTT platform is ready to cash in on it. The duo will play in Las Vegas on 3rd March with the match being telecasted on Netflix itself.
Nadal hasn’t played since his quarter-final exit in Brisbane in January. He picked up another injury that led to him withdrawing from the 2024 Australian Open as well. Alcaraz last played at the Rio Open but retired in his very first match after rolling his ankle on the second point of the match.
Thankfully, the injury isn’t serious for the 20-year-old and he is scheduled to play the exhibition match. Jumping on the discussion around the clash, former World No. 3 and current captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team, David Ferrer, praised the initiative.
With tennis authorities trying their best to reach the maximum audience and bring in more fans, Ferrer felt a match like this could be useful. Netflix already has complete access to tournament sites for their show ‘Break Point’ which has completed two seasons so far.
Ferrer confirmed his presence at the match. He’ll be one of the commentators alongside compatriot Feliciano Lopez making it quite a heavy Spanish affair. Ferrer felt Nadal could also benefit from the clash as he could judge his level by playing against Alcaraz.
I am going to comment with Feliciano López. I'm glad they counted on me. I hope it will be a match of intensity, with good rhythm, that they play well. Knowing Rafa, I think he is going to care about that match, competing at the highest level because then comes Indian Wells.Said Ferrer speaking to Marca.
For him it is important to feel good in tennis and he is going to measure himself with nothing more and nothing less than Carlos Alcaraz. For Carlos it is also important because he has not played much and it will serve him well for Indian Wells and Miami. As a spectator, I would pay a ticket to see it.Ferrer added
Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal to play at Indian Wells later
The exhibition match will be followed by the 2024 Indian Wells Masters in the next week. The reigning Wimbledon champ is the defending champion this year. He had defeated Daniil Medvedev in the finals, completing the Sunshine Double, a feat Nadal is yet to achieve.
Nadal dropped a big bomb on tennis fans when he travelled to the USA sharing the flight with Novak Djokovic. Nadal is expected to travel to Las Vegas only for the match and return to California for the tournament in the tennis paradise.
With huge appearance fees followed by costly private sessions by both players, the Netflix Slam will surely bring in some big revenue if all goes well.
