Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal added another feather to his hat by winning the 2022 French Open when he defeated Casper Ruud in the final. This was his record 14th French Open and 22nd grand slam title. This was also the first time he defeated four Top 10 players en route to a grand slam victory and also the first time he won the French Open without winning any clay-court title that season.

With this, Nadal has taken a 2 major lead over arch-rivals- Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic who are both stuck at 20 majors each. While Djokovic, given his age, may overtake Nadal, it is highly unlikely that Federer will win a major again. The GOAT debate amongst the Big 3 has once again stirred up with different people giving different opinions.

Former tennis player and Romanian businessman, Ion Tiriac has spoken about Nadal and has called him the best ever. He said that neither Djokovic nor Federer are on his level. He mentioned that the way in which he dominated Djokovic in the quarterfinals, one cannot compare him to others.

“Rafael Nadal is the best of all. Neither Novak Djokovic nor Roger Federer is on his level,” Tiriac said. “In the match against Djokovic, Nadal played very, very well. Beating Djokovic, world No. 1, in that way… No, Nadal is going to be No. 1 in the world forever. You can’t compare him. Neither with Federer, for me.”

Nadal has now won 14 French Open titles- a feat that blows your mind. Pete Sampras once held the record for most grand slams won and he won 14 of them. Nadal now has 14 Roland Garros titles. Tiriac said that this feat will never ever be repeated even in the time to come and also added that he will definitely gun for the 15th Roland Garros title next year.

“You will never see, not even in your life nor in the life of your children, someone winning a Grand Slam tournament 14 times. Or 15. Because I’m sure he’s going to try next year,” he said.
