Rafael Nadal says he has nothing to prove after reaching his 14th Roland Garros Final, gives an update about his foot injury
Rafael Nadal
21-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal is through to his 30th major final after 3rd seed Alexander Zverev was forced to retire in the semifinal of the 2022 French Open. Zverev twisted his ankle badly in the second set and hence Nadal won the match 7-6(8),6-6, and reached a record 14th Roland Garros Final.
Before the tournament started, a lot was talked about Nadal’s foot. He was a well-known chronic foot condition that can trigger an injury at any point. The same thing happened to him at the Rome Masters where he lost to Denis Shapovalov in the Round of 16 due to enormous foot pain. So far at Paris, his foot hasn’t troubled him and Nadal hopes that would be the case for one more match.
Nadal, in the post-match press conference, gave an update about his physical health. He said that despite spending so much time on the court in the past week, he feels physically fine. He added that his mind about the injury hasn’t changed since Rome. He still believes that he isn’t at his 100% sue to his foot and knows that he needs to make sacrifices.
“Physically I’m Ok. Today the conditions were super humid, I hadn’t experienced them for a long time. If I was suffering, it was not before the physical. When the ball is loud, you suffer more physically anyway. My mind didn’t change since Rome. I was not very positive about my foot, but I was positive about giving me the opportunity to play here the last Sunday. I need to do sacrifices to keep playing but it makes sense,” Nadal said.
‘Winning is beautiful, it gives you adrenaline, and it makes me happy’: Rafael Nadal
The 13-time Roland Garros champion further said that he has nothing to prove to anyone and it is all about continuing to do what you love. He added how winning is beautiful and makes him happy and if he has to do it in pain, so be it.
“It’s not about having something to prove. It’s about continuing to do what you love. I like tennis, I like to feel I’m competitive against the best in the world. That’s it. Winning is beautiful, it gives you adrenaline, and it makes me happy. I’m doing the maximum to give me options whatever the physical shape. Win another title after the pain I had, it would be, wow,” he concluded.
