Rafael Nadal has announced a press conference for later today to talk about his participation in Roland Garros 2023. Though most are speculating that the press conference will be about him withdrawing from the French Open, many are also concerned about whether this is a retirement announcement. Whatever the outcome of the press conference, it seems like Rafael Nadal likes to build suspense.
Jose Morgado, the celebrated Portuguese tennis journalist, posted about the press conference on Twitter. With this news, he in turn set Twitter ablaze, as Rafael Nadal’s fans lost their minds. They are now very concerned about Rafael Nadal’s future. Not just the immediate French Open future but the long run. Does the conference mean he will retire soon?
Though the grapevine has confirmed he is most definitely missing the French Open 2023, fans will have to wait for a few hours to know the exact nature of the conference. Rafael Nadal once said no one holds a press conference unless they want to withdraw from a tournament. His words are testimonials to what he might announce at 4:30 p.m. local time.
Furthermore, Novak Djokovic had said that the French Open 2023 could become wide open, if and only if Rafael Nadal withdraws. The Serb was talking at the post-match conference after losing to Holger Rune in the quarterfinal at the Italian Open.
Well, the Serb was not too wrong about predicting Nadal’s withdrawal. Some fans also believe this might be to inform them he is withdrawing from the entire 2023 season but will be back in 2024, after recovering and rejuvenating. In an interview in 2022, Nadal said if he continues to play in 2024, Roland Garros will be his biggest priority.
