Jannik Sinner is enjoying a dominating campaign this year, as he dealt with a defeat just once, and that too against Carlos Alacaraz in the Indian Wells semifinals.

After the Italian stormed past Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 in the final of the Miami Open on Sunday, March 31, Alcaraz congratulated the 22-year-old on Instagram.

Following his win, Sinner uploaded a picture of him with the trophy on Instagram. Alcaraz was among the many fans and rivals who congratulated him for adding another crown to his name. The Spaniard simply dropped three emojis to congratulate the newly crowned World No. 2.

Before defeating Grigor Dimitrov, Sinner outclassed Daniil Medvedev 6-1, 6-2. It was totally different from their encounter at the Australian Open final, where the Russian gave a tough fight in a match that stretched to five sets.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, was eyeing his 14th ATP title in Miami but succumbed in a one-sided quarterfinal loss to Dimitrov. In that match, all Alcaraz won was just six games, losing by a scoreline of 2-6, 4-6.

Jannik Sinner received 1000 points after the Miami Open glory. He is now 22-1 on the season. His previous two titles this season came at the Australian Open and the ATP Rotterdam Open. This win also made Sinner the first Italian to become a No. 2 ranked player on the ATP circuit.

So on Monday, Sinner dethroned Carlos Alcaraz from the World No.2 rankings. The Spaniard couldn’t claim a Sunshine Double as Dimitrov ended his campaign.

After this win, Sinner said he never thought of becoming a World No. 2 player before, and so he is enjoying this feeling. But as the European clay season will start next week with the Monte Carlo Masters, Sinner said he doesn’t have much time to enjoy his success.

Being number two, it's an amazing feeling. I never thought it would come to this point. I come from a very normal family. My dad is still working, as is my mom too. For me, sport is one thing and life is different.

Sinner has locked horns with Alcaraz eight times, with both winning four matches each. As mentioned before, they last played against each other in the Indian Wells semifinals, which the Spaniard won.
