“Is this a joke or what” Roberto Bautista Agut demands the supervisor over unjust time violation during his fourth-round match at 2023 Australian Open

Roberto Bautista Agut and the supervisor

Roberto Bautista Agut summoned the match supervisor within ten minutes of his fourth-round clash with American Tommy Paul at the 2023 Australian Open. He was very unhappy with a time violation being issued to him during the match’s opening game.

Agut was enraged by the call. He approached the chair umpire saying, “Is this a joke or what?” He had mistaken the call to be a code violation, something the umpire clarified. Agut said, “The match before I was playing one game before between the points… the first game you give a code violation?” But Agut continued his protests even when the umpire said the supervisor wouldn’t be coming to talk to him.

The supervisor then ended up walking onto the court. Agut told the supervisor, “No, no you cannot be the referee and judge one player differently to the other one, you cannot, you cannot, you cannot, this is not good what she did.” The supervisor reminded Agut that it was a time violation. She said,” Well, this is what the clocks are here to help with.”

The game continued on after the incident. Agut went on to lose that point. Agut would go on to lose the game and the set to the American Tommy Paul. The Spaniard, who defeated Andy Murray in the previous round, didn’t go down without a fight. He still lost though but would be proud of his run at the 2023 Australian Open.

The American Tommy Paul got to the quarterfinals with a shock win over Bautista Agut. He bested the 34-year-old in a four-set thriller. The match ended 6-2,4-6,6-2,7-5 to Paul.

Paul outplayed Agut throughout the match. He secured the first set fairly comfortably. But Agut was at the races too, winning the second set to mount the pressure on Paul. He responded perfectly. Paul hit 58 winners and 11 winners as he won in close to three and a half hours.

Paul will now face fellow American Ben Shilton in the quarterfinals. The 20-year-old beat another American J.J. Wolf to get to that stage. Paul will be optimistic and hope to continue his dream run at the Grand Slam tournament.
