BREAKING: Roberto Bautista Agut tests positive for Covid-19, becomes the third player to withdraw from Wimbledon 2022

World No. 19 and the 17th seed at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, Roberto Bautista Agut has been forced to withdraw from the Grand Slam after he tested positive hours prior to his second-round match. The Spaniard was supposed to take on Daniel Galan on Court 3 today but his medical condition has forced him to hand a walkover to the Colombian.

Agut had played his round 1 match against Attila Balazs defeating him comfortably in straight-sets continuing his form as he was a finalist in the 2022 Mallorca Championships that were played in the week before Wimbledon started. Agut was one of the players expected to make a deep run but it was not meant to be as the 2019 semi-finalist withdraws from the event.

Agut took to his Twitter handle to inform about his condition and decision to withdraw from the tournament. Agut joins last year’s runner-up Matteo Berrettini and former semi-finalist Marin Cilic as the players to withdraw from this year’s event due to the virus as no bio-bubbles and covid restrictions are in place at this year’s Grand Slam owing to the fall in number of cases in the region.

The Spaniard wrote, “Today I have notified @Wimbledon of my cancellation. I have tested positive for Covid-19. Fortunately, the symptoms are not very serious, but I think it is the best decision. Thanks for your support. I hope to come back soon. I had to withdraw because of Covid. Hope to be back soon.”

Agut’s withdrawal seems to be shocking as he had earlier spoken about continuing to play even if he tested positive as he has earlier also battled illness during his matches. But it seems the Grand Slam ensured that to contain the spread, Agut needs to be taken out. “I guess if I had COVID I would play. I have played many times in my career when I was sick or had a fever. And I think it’s perfect for the organization to let the player make the decision based on how he feels,” Agut had said as per WeloveTennis.
