Novak Djokovic just needs to win this year’s Wimbledon Championships to get crowned as the winner for the eighth time at the All England Club. This will help him join Roger Federer with the same number of titles.
Djokovic arrived at Wimbledon after a successful French Open run where he clinched his record 23 Grand Slam titles by beating Casper Ruud in the final. In the first round, the Serb defeated Argentina’s Pedro Cachin in straight sets, followed by his second-round win against Jordan Thompson in straight sets.
In an interview, Federer opened up about his feelings about Djokovic’s winning his eighth Wimbledon title. The Swiss legend feels that if Djokovic wins the title, it will be beneficial for tennis and sports in general because it’s going to add more to history.
“Anything more he does adds to tennis and history and goes above and beyond just talking tennis- it goes into global sports, like when he went to 23 in Paris, this is incredible stuff, great news, and it’s great for the game,” Federer said in an exclusive interview with CNN.

After Novak Djokovic defeated Jordan Thompson with the score of 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-5, the Serbian inched closer to a record-extending 24 Grand Slam title, and he registered his 350th Grand Slam win. This made him the third player in the history of tennis to achieve the feat.
Roger Federer stands atop with 369 wins at the major tournaments, and second, on the list is American legend Serena Williams. Williams, who retired from tennis after winning 23 Grand Slam titles, has won the Grand Slam matches 365 times.
Djokovic will be playing his match in the third round either against Stan Wawrinka or Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Wawrinka has often restricted Djokovic’s run at the Grand Slam events, so it will be an interesting match if he faces the Swiss player again.
The 36-year-old leads the head-to-head record against Wawrinka 20-6. Their last meeting was at the 2022 Rome Masters where Djokovic emerged victorious in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. The last time Wawrinka won against Djokovic was in the fourth round of the 2019 US Open where Djokovic was forced to retire.
Meanwhile, against Etcheverry, Djokovic leads 1-0 in their head-to-head encounter. They met at the 2023 Rome Masters where Djokovic secured the win in straight sets 7(5)-5, 6-2.
