Nick Kyrgios has missed his home Grand Slam event as he is not playing in the ongoing Australian Open. Due to injuries, he has not yet participated in any competitive tennis since June 2023.

Currently, he is working as a commentator for Eurosport. While commentating on Wednesday (January 24) during the match between Germany’s Alexander Zverev and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, Kyrgios recounted a hilarious story about his younger days.

Roger Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion, invited the Australian for a training week and made him live in a three-star hotel.

He invited me for a training week and I thought I was going to be staying in a five-six-star hotel… He put me in a three-star hotel for two weeks. Cheers Rog! The Wi-Fi was patchy, we couldn't even get a good night's rest. The guy was out there for three or four hours with me the next day.

Kyrgios further revealed how he used to wonder about how Federer trains. The Australian said Federer used to create his drills and worked on them.

Did Nick Kyrgios ever defeat Roger Federer?

Yes, Nick Kyrgios once defeated Roger Federer in their first encounter. They met at the 2015 Madrid Open, where the Aussie clinched the win with a scoreline of 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 6-6 (12).

That was the only time Kyrgios could beat the Swiss legend. They faced seven times with Federer leading the head-to-head record 6-1.

The last time they locked horns was at the 2019 Laver Cup. It was Federer again who emerged victorious 5-7(5), 7-5, 10-7.

Notably, Kyrgios recently ruled himself out of the 2024 Paris Olympics but it’s not due to his injuries. In a column for Fairfax, Kyrgios wrote he wouldn’t be participating in the Olympics because of the Australian Olympic Committee’s (AOC) mistreatment.

He said that though he is willing to play, he won’t be participating. Kyrgios is angry because of what happened to him in 2016. Former AOC Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller back in 2016 said that they were monitoring Kyrgios’ behaviour which was not taken well by the tennis player.

So as he is not playing much tennis right now, he is focusing a lot on doing a media job. He also recently interviewed World No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the Rod Laver Arena after one of his victories.
