In a funny move, Roger Federer effectively recaptured his locker room from Carlos Alcaraz. Federer, who announced his retirement from tennis in 2022, was presented with the esteemed Icon Athlete Award on Friday at the Shanghai Masters.
The 20-time Grand Slam title winner visited the stadium on a trip down memory lane. He wished to relive moments from his historic playing career and interacted with up-and-coming players like Andrey Rublev. The part about his dressing room, though, was the most exciting part of his visit.
“I heard that Alcaraz was staying in my locker room this year. But, as he is not around anymore, I got it back, so I am sorry for him. But I am happy to have my own locker room again,” Federer humorously declared during his stroll down the tunnel of the locker rooms.
During this year’s Shanghai Masters, the young Spaniard Alcaraz was using Federer’s changing area. Alcaraz showed impressive form by defeating Gregoire Barrere and Dan Evans in straight sets. He joined the competition after losing in the semifinals of the China Open. In the fourth round, he faced a tenacious Grigor Dimitrov, and his run was over. The video was uploaded to Shanghai Masters’s official Twitter page.
Federer attracts all the attention at the Shanghai Masters
In a twisted moment, Andrey Rublev found himself participating at the Shanghai Masters against Roger Federer in addition to his opponent Ugo Humbert. Throughout the game, the Swiss legend was there, and nobody could take their eyes off of him.
Humbert was easily upset by fifth-seeded Rublev, 6-2, 6-3. He maintained composure to reach the semifinals of the competition. The Russian couldn’t help but notice the reaction of the audience when Federer entered the arena. “No he didn’t distract me at all. But all the people stopped focusing on the match because they were only focusing on Roger,” he said.
The event took place during Rublev and Humber’s fifth professional meeting. Their total record against one another is 2-2 after Humbert won their most recent encounter at the China Open. But this time, Rublev was able to turn the tables, winning in straight sets and advancing to the semifinals.
