While talking to Eurosport, Matt praised Roger by saying that his winning the title in 2009 after beating Robin Soderling meant a lot to him, and even though he did not beat Nadal, he beat Robin, who had defeated Nadal in that tournament.

He said, “I think winning Roland-Garros in 2009 probably meant more to him than most of the other 20 Grand Slams because the chances of winning when Nadal is playing on clay were very, very small. Of course, he didn’t beat Nadal that year but he did beat Robin Soderling in the final after he had beaten Nadal’’

He further continued by highlighting how Roger kept the consistency by being one of the best grass court players and going to be the most consecutive weeks as No 1. “Eight Wimbledon titles is top of the pile because no other man has ever won eight,” said Matt.

Continuing his train of thoughts, he further added, “Most consecutive weeks at No.1 is an unbelievable record, and winning five consecutive Wimbledon is just incredible. It goes to show what a great grasscourt player Roger Federer was to be that consistent.”

After 24 years, almost 15,000 matches, and 20 Grand Slam titles, the Swiss champion retired from tennis with an emotional and tearful farewell at the Laver Cup last year in 2022. He was welcomed with a standing ovation at this year’s Wimbledon as he took his place at the Royal Box.
