Nick Kyrgios came very close to his first Grand Slam singles title at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships but had to end his journey with the runners-up trophy as the 3-time defending champion Novak Djokovic won the match and picked up his 4th consecutive title at the historic All-England Club. Djokovic won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) to claim his 21st Grand Slam title and 7th Wimbledon title.
Kyrgios and Djokovic were playing against each other for the third time with Novak looking to win a match and a set against Nick for the first time. While Kyrgios managed to claim the first set, he was unable to inflict further damage as Djokovic put in a great performance to take the title home and continue his winning streak on Center Court with his last defeat on the Court coming in 2013.
“It was not my day”: Nick Kyrgios on losing the final

While Kyrgios and Djokovic have solved their differences and officially started a ‘Bromance‘, the Australian was back to his honest candid behaviour during his post-match press conference. Set to play Rafael Nadal in the semis, Kyrgios had a bye due to the Spaniard’s injury forcing him to withdraw prior to the semis. The Australian felt a break in momentum due to an extra day off and found it one of the factors affecting his performance.
“As I said before, I think I put myself in a position to win. But I also have to say that Novak didn’t make me feel as bad as Federer. Roger makes you want to leave the field. He can make you see unimaginable things. I don’t think Djokovic is the hardest to face. Afterwards, I also know that the anxiety of the final, the fact of not having played the semi-final did me a disservice because I was thinking about it all the time. I will also add that the fact that I did not sleep well meant that it was not my day,” said Nick in the press conference.
Nick’s comments could make sense if we look at the head-to-head record of him and Roger Federer. After beating Federer in their first-ever match, Kyrgios lost the next 6 consecutive matches with the Swiss Maestro currently leading 6-1 in the head-to-head against Nick. As for Djokovic, the win yesterday still keeps him behind Kyrgios who leads the Serb 2-1 in their head-to-head.
