The comeback queen of 2023, Elina Svitolina, will take on World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in the women’s second quarterfinal match of the French Open 2023. This might be an interesting battle between the two players, who seem to have a lot of tension between them owing to the global situation. Ukrainian Svitolina has been very vocal about her support for her country with the war raging between Russia and Belarus.

Whereas Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka has been at the center of attention, as on several occasions she has spoken about the locker room tension with Ukrainian players. Politics aside, Svitolina is on a roll now. Her defeat against Daria Kasatkina solidified her chances and made her more threatening to her opponent. Whereas 2023 has been a great year for Aryna Sabalenka, with very consistent performance all throughout.

World No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka has had a great 2023 so far. The player has been consistent through and through. Starting 2023 with her first Grand Slam win at the Australian Open, Sabalenka has solidified her strong position in women’s tennis. She has defeated both World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and World No. 3 Elena Rybakina in the finals at different events. Though she defeated Iga Swiatek in the Madrid Open final, she took down Rybakina in the Australian Open final. So far at the French Open, the Belarusian has not dropped even a single set. Though her pool has had lower-seeded and unseeded players so far, the World No. 2 has kept focus and won matches in a clinical manner.

Whereas Elina Svitolina has had a sort of dream run. The player who got back to professional tennis after her maternity break has crossed each hurdle with great panache. She had some difficult matchups in the four rounds, but Svitolina seems to have found her winning streak back in this tournament.

Right before coming to the French Open, Svitolina won a WTA 250 event at Strasbourg by defeating Anna Blinkova. She defeated 26th seed, Martina Trevisan, along with comeback wins over qualifier Storm Hunter and again over Anna Blinkova. She went on to defeat ninth-seeded Daria Kasatkina to book her spot in the French Open quarterfinal.

This is the fourth time Svitolina has reached the quarterfinals of the French Open. Though she has never gone beyond the quarter stage, she would be hoping to remedy that. Except she has a great uphill challenge in the form of the indomitable-looking Aryna Sabalenka. Though this is Sabalenka’s first-ever quarterfinal, the player looks in dangerous form and is determined to win this championship.

Both players have met each other only twice before, with the odds hanging in the balance. They have both won one match each, but Svitolina has won the only match they have played on clay. Despite having defeated Sabalenka before, it might be a very difficult challenge to repeat that feat due to Sabalenka’s amazing form currently. Though the Ukrainian has defeated tougher opponents so far, it will be interesting to see if she can best the Belarusian.

Match Prediction: Aryna Sabalenka to win in 2 sets
