Former World No. 13 Alexandr Dolgopolov is one of the many Ukrainian civilians who picked up arms against the Russian invasion attempt of Ukraine that started on 24th February and has resulted in a bloody war that has torn Ukraine apart. Dolgopolov played his last match in 2018 but retired in 2021 as a Pro.

His retirement has not been a joyous one as he is now manning the boundaries of his country pushing the Russian forces back and keeping their country independent. Alexandr has been using his popularity to bring global attention to the atrocities of the Russian forces and has been giving interviews and regular updates through his social media accounts.

With rumours floating around a possible ban on all Russian and Belarusian tennis players from the 2022 Wimbledon Championships as the UK has been a strongly opposing the Russian aggression and providing Ukraine with arms and other needs in their fight, the Championships are likely to become the first tournament to not allow the players hailing from the two countries as so far only the Russian and Belarusian tennis federations have been suspended resulting in players playing without their national flag.

“Rumours say Wimbledon planning to do the right thing, as many sports already did and show an example of the right decisions to the tennis world. This has to stop and yes, Russians are accountable for the actions of their country, army and the leaders they choose for 20 years. Staying silent, or just saying, no war is not enough anymore,” tweeted Dolgopolov.

“Russia should be banned from the free world”: Alexandr Dolgopolov

Dolgopolov also once again reminded that Russians have done horrendous crimes in Ukraine and as a result, they should be banned from everything.

“The people of Russia have to condemn this mass murder of civilians and already said to be a genocide, from many leaders. Even every war rule is being broken here. Massive rapes of women and children, children kidnapped in thousands. To Russia, people on occupated territory were made to fight against Ukraine under gunpoint and many many other war crimes. So yes, until they stop their criminal government, Russia should be banned from the free world in anything possible, including all sports,” wrote Dolgopolov in separate tweets.

With a final decision on the subject expected in the next week’s annual press conference prior to the Championships, a lot will be dependent on what happens in the coming week.
