Sebastian Korda praises ‘electric’ Ben Shelton after winning the crunch All-American battle at the Shanghai Masters

Sebastian Korda is in his all-time best spirit. Gaining victory over second seed Daniil Medvedev, he has now defeated fellow American Ben Shelton. Playing in the quarterfinals, Korda overcame Shelton in an epic three-setter match.

During his on-court interview, Korda had nothing but praises for the young American as he said, “He’s such an electric tennis player. It’s a lot of fun to share the court with him.”

Korda acknowledged his fierce style on the court. He regarded the game as a high-level match. “We had a lot of great points out there. Hopefully, it’s the first of many many battles we play against each other,” he said.

The match was a spectacular display of action. Both Shelton and Korda played aggressively which led the match to two tiebreakers. In the end, Korda emerged victorious.

A One Of Its Kind Match

The first all-American ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal since 2017 took place through this match, and it lived up to the hype. The outcome, 6-7(12), 6-2, 7-6(6), was indicative of the intensity of the struggle, with Korda recovering after dropping the opening set.

Korda remained focused despite Shelton’s excellent performance. He saved a set point and converted his fifth set point. In the second set, the 23-year-old Korda broke Shelton three times by taking advantage of his exhaustion.

Shelton, who is known for his strong forehand, produced a comeback to force a tie-break after Korda took a 4-2 lead in the third set. Korda eventually won the match by converting five of the 16 break opportunities.

By winning, he became the first American to advance to the semifinal round of the Shanghai competition, making history. Korda will compete against 16th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the upcoming semi-final. Hurkacz qualified after defeating Fabian Marozsan 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
