In a reunion that not many expected, tennis greats Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova were spotted together at the 2024 Balmain Paris Fashion Week. The two Grand Slam singles champions shared one of the most heated rivalries on the Tour during their playing days.
While Sharapova made her professional debut in 2001, six years later than Williams, she was the one to retire first among them. The Russian retired in 2000 while the American ‘evolved’ away from the sport in 2022. Their 2004 Wimbledon finals started took their rivalry to the next level.
With Williams playing as the two-time defending champ, not many gave a chance to the 17-year-old. But Sharapova lost just five matches to win the Championships. But Williams took the defeat to heart and the loss to the teen again in the Tour Finals that year made things more serious.
Down 1-2 in the head-to-head, Williams didn’t lose a single match again. At the time of Sharapova’s retirement, the American led their head-to-head 20-2. Amid this, the two shared blows off the court as well. This included sarcastic digs into each other’s personal lives.
Sharapova’s relationship with ATP hunk Grigor Dimitrov saw Williams make a snarky comment. The five-time singles Major title winner then hit back with a comment on Williams’ alleged relationship with her then coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
But all of this now seems a thing of the past for the two. Their exchange in the short clip available shows the two enjoying and laughing together. While the video doesn’t show them exchanging a hug, they definitely look happy to see each other.
Fans have a field day as Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova meet in Paris
Both Sharapova and Williams have been fashion icons irrespective of them being active players. Their presence at the event was not surprising. But fans on social media were certainly stunned by the two enjoying each other’s company.
While a few were happy to see the two finally move on leaving their differences, many others were not. Some took digs at Sharapova for her poor head-to-head record against Williams while others questioned if they did move on.
Social media users can only speculate the true relationship between the two players. But it is always good to see retired pros meeting and having a fun time after all the hard work of years on the court.
