Serena Williams casts doubts about returning for US Open, says “Who knows where I pop up”
Serena Williams
23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams marked her return to professional tennis in the first round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships where she lost in 3-sets to World No. 115 France’s Harmony Tan. Competing in a singles match after almost a year, Serena did have her moments but could not hold the fort the whole time as the match extended beyond the 3-hour mark and ended going Tan’s way.
The first set saw go no a 4-game winning streak but was not enough to claim the set. In the second set, she almost served a bagel before Tan won the 6th game to make it 5-1 as the American closed out the set in the next game. The third set reached the tiebreaker completely balanced. Tan had taken a 4-0 lead which was cut down by Serena but the Frenchwoman came clutch in the final few points to register a win on her debut at the All-England Club.
“First place I’ve won a Grand Slam” Serena Williams on the US Open
The conclusion of Wimbledon will direct the Tour towards focusing on the hardcourt events starting with the US Open leg that will build-up to the 2022 US Open, the fourth and final Slam of the season. With Serena having missed the first two majors and a first-round exit in the third, she would be expected to play as she is still in contention of matching Margaret Court‘s record of 24 Grand Slams and the American is not ready to rule out her participation from the US Open yet.
“It definitely makes me want to hit the practice courts because, you know, when you’re playing not bad and you’re so close. Like I said, any other opponent probably would have suited my game better. So, yeah, I feel like that it’s actually kind of like, Okay, Serena, you can do this if you want.
“Yeah, I mean, when you’re at home, especially in New York, and the US Open, that being the first place I’ve won a Grand Slam, is something that’s always super special. Your first time is always special. There’s definitely, you know, lots of motivation to get better and to play at home,” said Serena in her post-match press conference. With the 2022 US Open starting from 29th August, Serena has 2 months to prepare herself for the Grand Slam and win her 7th US Open title that would make her the most decorated champion in New York.
