Novak Djokovic could have won 26 Grand Slam titles if it wasn’t for his vaccination stance, which led to his missing a couple of Grand Slam tournaments, believes Serena Williams’ childhood coach Rick Macci. In an exclusive interview with FirstSportz, the 69-year-old coach highlighted the Serb’s numbers and opined that Djokovic is still hungry for more of these coveted cups.
Wimbledon is approaching fast and the prediction for the same has started. Who is the favorite to lift the prestigious trophy? Again, many would point their fingers at Djokovic because he is not only a seven-time champion at the SW19 but is a four-time defending champion as well. If he wins, he will tie the tally with Roger Federer, who has won a record eight titles at the All-England Club.
Remember, he has won the last 4 Wimbledons. He is definitely the favorite. The guy is going down as the greatest male player to ever hold a racket. 389 weeks he was No.1 (Are you kidding me?), 23 Grand Slam titles, 10 Australian, 7 Wimbledon, 3 US Open, 3 French, 94 singles titles, and he couldn't play because he never got the vaccine. Maybe if he'd have had one more shot, he would've had a lot more shots at slams.Macci said
Djokovic missed playing the 2022 Australian Open and the US Open that year due to his vaccination stance but made a terrific comeback to Melbourne only to take home his 22 Grand Slam titles and equal the tally with arch-rival Rafael Nadal. At the 2023 French Open, when many predicted young sensation Carlos Alcaraz to clinch his second Grand Slam title, even downplaying the Serb, the latter again emerged victorious even after a series of not-so-impressive performances on clay court matches prior to the Roland Garros.
The guy could've had 26 by now. No one delivered from awkward positions like the Djoker. He is not done yet. Wimbledon's gonna be tough, there are some guys but he is definitely the favorite.Macci added
Rick Macci believes Jannik Sinner can challenge Novak Djokovic
According to Rick Macci, instead of Carlos Alcaraz, it’s Jannik Sinner who can challenge Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. The movement on grass is altogether different from that on clay and anyone who has a big serve can do the damage as everything happens quickly on the grass, feels Macci.
Macci believes that Alcaraz will be full of confidence following his title-winning campaign at the recently concluded Queen’s Club Championships. But despite that, the renowned coach chose Sinner because of his movement on the grass.
Despite everything, Novak has to be the heavy favorite.Macci added
Meanwhile, last year, Djokovic defeated Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon final to lift his seventh title in the tournament. A few days ago, he posted a video on his social media, where he could be seen eating the grass of the All-England Club, with the caption: “Remember the taste and hungry for more.”
In case you missed it!
