“Serena Williams is not the GOAT, it is Margaret Court,” Serena Williams gets mocked as Margaret Court’s record of 24 majors remains intact

Serena Williams and Margaret Court

After a run of 27 years, Serena Williams has finally decided to hang her racket and it could not come at a better place other than the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the Flushing Meadows. Playing in the 2022 US Open, Serena was up against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic who after seeing 5 match points defended, eventually won the match 7-5. 6-7(7), 6-1 just a little after the 3-hour mark on the match clock.

Serena had already announced her plans to retire after this year’s US Open and despite many fearing she will crash out in the first round itself, the American battled till the third round before finally drawing a curtain on her illustrious career where she finishes with 23 Grand Slam titles, 4 Olympic Golds, Golden Slam in both Singles and Doubles and record-tying most weeks as World No. 1.

Despite Serena‘s 23 majors, she falls one short of the 24 Grand Slam title record of Margaret Court, the Australian who combined her majors in both Amateur and Open Era. While the debate about the Open Era can always continue, none can deny that Court did win 24 majors with different conditions of the court, rackets and even balls, something that has developed rapidly in the modern-day game.

Following Serena’s defeat to Tomljanovic, tennis fans on Twitter once again ignited the GOAT debate between Court and Serena and eventually Serena’s status as GOAT when it comes to winning most majors. While Serena herself believes that she holds the record given she won it all in the Open Era, the stats when combined certainly point towards Court.
