At the NAACP Image Awards, Serena Williams was presented with the Jackie Robinson Sports Award, which is named in honor of the pioneering African American baseball player who broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Following her defeat by Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open, Williams retired from professional tennis in 2022.
After presenting Serena Williams with the esteemed award, Kerry Washington, a longtime supporter of the tennis star, spoke highly of her. The acclaimed Hollywood actress took to social media to congratulate Williams and expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to present the trophy to the ‘Greatest of All Time’. Both of them share a good relationship as they are good friends for a long time.
Williams made fun of her trophy collection and said, “I haven’t held up a trophy in a long time. Do I do it like this? [Laughs] Thank you. It’s such an honor to have a friend present this award to me today. I am incredibly grateful for your incredible kind words and your unwavering support over the years.”
Thanking NAACP, she said, “Thank you to the NAACP, which continues to accelerate change with important areas such as health care, education, sports, the economy and so, so much more. The tireless efforts of your organization are making a difference in the lives of African Americans today and tomorrow. I’d also like to thank the image awards and the Hollywood bureau for honoring me with the Jackie Robinson award tonight.”

The trophy cabinet of Serena William’s keeps growing
Serena Williams’ celebrated career came to an end at the 2022 US Open. Although the former world No.1 won an impressive 23 Grand Slam titles and 73 singles career titles, she secured her most recent win three years ago at the 2020 ASB Classic in Auckland. Nevertheless, she had been busy post retirement with her family and other commercials.
In her speech, Serena also acknowledged many other prominent people and said, “I know this might be surprising to you, but I feel like a fangirl to be in this room around so many artists who have played my favorite characters in so many stories that made me cry, laugh, anything marvel. And anything in between.”
She also thanked her friend, Kerry Washington for being such a good friend to her and also present the award. She also added by saying she’s grateful for her support throughout all these years.
