Serena Williams’ path to eighth Wimbledon title: Karolina Pliskova scare and a potential semifinal showdown against Iga Swiatek

Serena Williams

Serena Williams will return to professional tennis at Wimbledon after missing out for a year. She got herself injured last year at Wimbledon in the first round and hasn’t played on tour ever since. Many assumed that Serena has retired and will never get back on the court again but to everyone’s surprise, Serena announced her return a few weeks ago.

She played doubles at Eastbourne with Ons Jabeur this week to get some match practice and the duo made it to the semifinals before Jabeur had to withdraw due to an injury. Serena looked fit during the tournament and some important match time got the rustiness out of her.

Serena got a wild card entry into Wimbledon and hence is unseeded. Naturally, she gets a very tough draw and will have to battle seeded players from the second round. She gets an easy first-round clash against Frenchwoman Harmony Tan. After that, she is expected to meet 32nd seed Sara Sorribes Tormo. The first two rounds should be easy for Serena before facing Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova in the third round.

Although Pliskova might not be in the best of form, she still is a very dangerous opponent. If Serena gets past Pliskova, she will then meet Coco Gauff in what could be a very monumental match-up in American tennis.

In the quarterfinals, Serena is expected to meet either Paula Badosa, or any of the former Wimbledon champions, Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova. And if Serena manages to clear all hurdles, she will then lock horns against World No.1 and French Open champion Iga Swiatek. Assuming she beats Swiatek, either Anett Kontaveit or Ons Jabeur are expected to meet her in the final.
