Serena Williams once again steps up to the occasion and delays her retirement by one more match as she stuns World No.2 Anett Kontaveit in the second round of the 2022 US Open. Serena got the better of Kontaveit in three tough sets 7-6(4),2-6,6-2 to reach the third round of the US Open and also registered her 108th match win at Flushing Meadows.

Serena looked a much better player than in the previous match and was firing up her serve pretty well. Her movement wasn’t at par but she compensated for it with her serve and showed nerved of steel to clinch the first set tie-break. Kontaveit raised her level in the second set and attacked Serena’s second serve to break her twice and win the second set.

The American once again gave herself a pep talk and played a very good third set. She soaked in all the pressure and delivered by breaking the Estonian twice as she won the third set and eventually the match with a big smile. In the on-court interview, she gave some classy and savage answers to which the crowd couldn’t do anything but gasp in awe.

She addressed the crowd and revealed how much she was enjoying the energy and atmosphere. She cheekily said that there’s a little left in her and she’s a pretty good player.

“It’s no rush here,” Serena said. “I’m loving this crowd and it’s really fantastic. There’s still a little left in me. Well, I’m a pretty good player! This is what I do best. I love a challenge and I’m rising to the challenge. I haven’t played many matches but I’ve been practicing really well. In my last few matches, it wasn’t coming together. But in New York, it’s really coming together.”

When asked whether she is surprised by the level of her game, Serena gave a very savage response. “What?” she asked and then smiled and said, “I’m just Serena you know.”

“After I lost the second set I thought I got to give my best effort or this could be it. I just wanted to keep trying and see what I could do, I just did my best and I was super excited to be honest.”

Serena will now face Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round on Friday night where she’ll have a realistic chance to enter the second week of the US Open.
