Frances Tiafoe has had a great season so far. As the tenth seed, Tiafoe made it to the Quarter-finals of the Citi Open as well as the US Open, where he lost to fellow American Ben Shelton over four sets. He played at the Laver Cup last month where he represented Team World, which won the tournament for a second year straight. The American won titles at the Stuttgart Open in June and at the ATP event in Houston as well. He also played in the semi-finals at Indian Wells where he lost to the Russian top seed, Daniil Medvedev.

On the other hand, Lorenzo Sonego played at the China Open recently, where he lost his first-round match against Frenchman, Ugo Humbert. Although the 28-year-old hasn’t won any titles in this season so far, he had a successful stint at the Dubai Tennis Championships where he made it to the quarter-finals.

Sonego beat Philip Sekulic in his first-round match in Shanghai. He ousted out Sekulic, scoring 6-3, 6-2 to win the match in straight sets over the Australian.

Frances Tiafoe vs. Lorenzo Sonego: Match Prediction

Tiafoe has clashed with Lorenzo Sonego on three previous occasions. The Italian leads the head-to-head against the 25-year-old Tiafoe with 2-1. The duo’s latest clash came about this year at the ATP event in Miami where Lorenzo beat the American, scoring 6-3, 6-4 over two sets.

Last year, the two were up against one another in France, where Tiafoe beat the Italian in straight sets. However, in November 2022, in the Quarter-final round of the Davis Cup in Spain, Lorenzo came on top of the American in a straight sets victory. Tiafoe lost the match for his team, scoring 3-6, 6-7.

Lorenzo leading the head-to-head between the duo despite being the World No.59 is due to the vastly different playing styles the two players have. While Tiafoe has quite an aggressive gameplay, Sonego takes on a more strategic route. At their upcoming match, if Sonego is able to keep up with Tiafoe’s speed on-court, the Italian could easily score a third straight victory over the American.
