Speaking on The Functional Tennis Podcast, Macci said “She’s not gonna blow through you, like a Venus or Serena or Mary Pierce or Sharapova. But, she understood the geometry of the court. She bisected the court correctly, had a great drop shot, a brutal competitor.”

According to Macci, Kenin’s mental toughness distinguishes her from her peers in the tennis world. He referred to her as a “scary sort of creature,” a moniker he attributed to the unparalleled mentality that has enabled her to become one of the top-ranked tennis players in the world, reaching as high as World No. 4.

He further said “Mentally, she had that box checked. A bomb could go off on the next court and she’d be still looking at me and that’s why I come up with this…’she’s a scary sort of creature I have ever taught.”

Sofia Kenin had a bad start to 2023

The former world No.4 had a pretty bad start to this season. She lost her first round of the Australian Open to Victoria Azarenka in straight sets. Sofia Kenin later went to Linz Open but unfortunately, she lost in the first round of that tournament too. However, she recently played in Qatar Open but was able to win only her first match before getting eliminated in the round of 16.

After defeating Liudmila Samsonova in the opening match, she fell against eighth seed Veronika Kudermetova in the second round on Wednesday. However, her former coach still believes that she has the potential to play at the top level. This American is looking to turn her tides and start returning to her best form to compete and win in the rest of the season.
