“She is promoting tennis in Poland” Iga Swiatek’s father Tomasz comes to his daughter’s defence after the World No. 1 was criticised for playing the Polish Cup on Clay

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek will return to action for the first time since her 3rd round exit at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships where her winning streak of 37 consecutive matches also came to an end. The 21-year-old will be next seen in action at the 2022 Polish Open in Warsaw, the only Tour event in the country that has been granted the WTA-250 status and will be the final claycourt event for the season for 250 and above categories.
Swiatek will return to a WTA-250 event for the first time since 2019 with the 2019 Citi Open in Washington being her last 250-category event. With 6 titles already this season of which 3 have come on clay and 3 on hard courts, it was a surprise that Iga will be back on the surface as all events from August will be on hard courts during the US Open Leg series for the 2022 US Open where Iga will be the favourite for the major given she has lost only 3 matches all year on the surface and is currently on a 19-match winning streak on the surface.
“This tournament is too small for Iga Swiatek”: Iga’s father Tomasz

Questions were raised over Swiatek‘s participation in the competition as many of the top-ranked players are playing in hardcourt events or preparing themselves for the events starting from August first week. With the surface also being different from what the remainder of the season lies ahead, Swiatek’s participation in a claycourt event in the week before the US Open Leg series is certainly unusual but to the player’s delight, her father and tournament organiser Tomasz explained the entire situation.
“We want to promote tennis in our country, hence the participation of the best tennis player in the world at the moment. Iga declared presence at this tournament and it is true that this tournament is a bit too small for her, although I am very happy that she will and will promote tennis, because it is the main goal to show that we have decent tennis level in Poland,” said Tomasz Swiatek speaking with RDC’s “Magazyn Sportowy”.
