Wimbledon Championship 2022 had a lot of drama this year starting from the ban on Russian and Belarus players to ATP deciding to remove ranking points from the tournament. The tournament also saw some shocking early exits of top-form players in the earlier stages of the competition, players like Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur playing their maiden finals and making history for their country, to Novak Djokovic creating history by winning his 4th Wimbledon trophy consecutively and Nick Kyrgios playing his maiden final at the SW19. One such shocking event was the announcement of Serena Williams‘ comeback at this year’s Wimbledon championship just two weeks before the commencement of the tournament.
Serena Williams of the United States of America is a 23-time singles Grand Slam Champion. The American legend made her come back to Wimbledon after being out of action for a year. The last match that she played was at the All England Club in 2021 where she had to retire during the first round match because of a leg injury which was unbearable for her to continue and she was in tears. She lost to Harmony Tan in the first-round match who outrighted her in all departments. Even though the result was not in her favor, she played some fantastic shots and gave a tough fight.

Serena Williams took the tennis world into a storm when she announced her comeback to the SW19 this year. She was returning to the court, exactly after a year of which no one was aware. Tennis Analyst and former tennis player, Barbara Schett, in an interview, highlighted Serena’s comeback as her favorite highlight of this year’s grass-court tournament which ended on Sunday, 10th July 2022. She said, “There’s so many highlights during the course of two weeks, but if I would pick one, it was lovely to see Serena Williams back“.
She further said that” Even though she lost in the first round, it was just great to see her-who knows if she’s gonna be back here in Wimbledon. She wants to play at the US open in front of her people. She is a champion and an inspiration for the game”. She appreciated the efforts of Serena Williams, saying “It was wonderful to see her back and I think she has done a great job considering the fact that she hasn’t played for a year“.
