“She’s always been so sweet to me” Serena Williams reveals why she chose Ons Jabeur as her partner after returning to winning ways on the WTA Tour

Serena Williams and Ons Jabeur
23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams returned to the WTA tour after almost a year at Eastbourne this week. She played doubles with Ons Jabeur and the duo managed to win their first-round match against Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzková in three tight sets 2-6,6-3,1-0(13-11) to reach the quarterfinal at Eastbourne International.
Serena has decided to come back in Singles at Wimbledon and is playing at Eastbourne to get some much-needed court time. She looked rusty at the start of the match and had a restricted movement and serving motion. But as the match progressed, Serena got in her groove and looked in fine touch. She even dictated some points from the baseline in the second set and the duo held their nerve to win the super-tiebreaker 13-11.
After the match, Serena spoke about her experience sharing the court with Ons and also lauded their opponents for giving them a tough fight. “It was so fun to play with Ons,” Williams said after the win. “It was great, we had a lot of fun, and our opponents played amazing! We were just trying to stay in there after the first set.”

Serena also revealed why she chose Jabeur as her partner to play doubles at Eastbourne. She revealed that she volunterily called her because she was playing so well on tour and Serena herself needed to play some matches in order to let go of the rustiness before Wimbledon.
She added that Jabeur has always been sweet to her on the tour and hence she thought it’d be fun to play with her. “I called her. She’s been playing so well, and I knew I had to play some matches. She’s always been so sweet to me on tour so I thought it would be fun to play [with her],” she said.
