Tennis legend Simona Halep has been under murky water after being tested positive for an illegal substance in her body during the US Open 2022. Following the widespread backlash and the slew of allegations against her, the two-time Grand Slam champion has been temporarily banned from participating in any of the WTA competitions by the International Tennis Integrity Agency. The substance which was found in her body was Roxadustat.
For context, the prohibited substance stimulates the bone marrow to produce hemoglobin and red blood cells, thus improving the athlete’s performance.
Naturally, as soon as the news came to light, many prominent tennis champions, fans, followers, and viewers rushed to major social media platforms in order to provide their take on the matter. Moreover, the serious allegation has divided the tennis community as it had mixed reactions to it. While the majority of fans extended their unconditional support to the Two-Time Grand Slam champion, others were a little agitated by the disclosure, brutally slamming her for her doings.
With that being said, after her former teammate, Sorana Cîrstea, and her ex-husband Toni Iuruc came to her defense, her former coach Darren Cahill joined the bandwagon.
Darren Cahill was on Halep’s team during the best time of her career. During this time, she won her first Grand Slam title- The French Open in 2018. She also reached the Australian Open final and achieved the World No.1 WTA ranking. She remained at the top for two years. In 2021, they decided to end their partnership and move on with their careers.
Penning an extremely emotional yet defensive note, Darren Cahill denied all allegations against Halep. Like Iuruc, Mr. Cahill vouched for the integrity and fairness of the player he coached for six years. He thinks that she will come to clean out of this mess soon.
She is currently ranked World No.9, just missing the WTA Elite 8 list and a chance to participate in the WTA Finals.
What does Darren Cahill’s support mean for Simona Halep?
Darren Cahill is a former tennis player and coach. In his stints has worked with many talented players. The first name that comes to the list is Andre Agassi. With Cahill in his team, Agassi won many titles and his 8th grand slam title, i.e., the Australian Open in 2003. He also became the World’s No.1 player during this period.
In all these years, Cahill also worked with British legends, Andy Murray, Ana Ivanovic, Fernando Verdasco, Daniela Hantuchová, and Sorana Cîrstea before joining the team of Simona Halep. He was also the coach of the Australian Davis Cup team between 2007 and 2009.
Darren Cahill is a respected voice in the world of tennis, and his support can give her immense confidence. Meanwhile, Simona Halep has also dismissed all the charges leveled against her.
