Six-time Slam champion Boris Becker congratulates Novak Djokovic following his 2023 Australian Open win

Boris Becker,
the former coach of Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic, posted a congratulatory message on social media. The post consisted of Djokovic kissing the Norman Brookes trophy. Having won it for a record-extending 10th time, Djokovic equaled Nadal’s tally of 22 Grand Slams.

For those uninitiated, Becker coached Djokovic for three years. The two Slam champions became master & apprentice in December 2013. They tasted tremendous success throughout their tenure together. Before parting ways in December 2016. Amongst several stars who congratulated Djokovic was former world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz. He tweeted saying, “Congratulations on the Australian Open and the world number one. Very well deserved.”

But the sentiment of competition wasn’t lost on Alcaraz, as he added the words, “Hope to see you on court” to his post. Boasting a 1-0 career win-loss record against Djokovic, Alcaraz will be looking to reclaim the ATP top spot.

Djokovic and Alcaraz have complimented each other incredibly in the past. “He is special. Already he’s breaking a lot of records as a teenager, winning two Masters events this year, a couple of (ATP) 500s. So far he’s the best player in the world, no question, this year” said Djokovic in mid-2022.

“Class act” Boris Becker praises Carlos Alcaraz’s response following Djokovic’s Slam run

Boris Becker has never shied away from heaping praise on fellow tennis professionals. He took to social media to applaud former world number 1, Carlos Alcaraz. A Djokovic-Tsitsipas title bout confirmed the fact that Alcaraz would lose his spot atop the ATP rankings. The reigning US Open champion suffered an injury in Paris. Due to this, he couldn’t participate in the Nitto ATP Finals tournament.

In a heartfelt post earlier in January, he let the world know that he wouldn’t be making the trip to Australia. Having not fully recovered, a disheartened Alcaraz had to withdraw from the Australian Open. There were three players on tour who were thus vying for the top spot. Norwegian star and second seed Casper Ruud bowed out of the tournament in the early stages.

While one wilted under the pressure, the other two made sure they made it to the big dance. Recording dominant scorelines, Djokovic and Tsitsipas dazzled the Australian crowd on their way to the final. With victories over Tommy Paul and Karen Khachanov, respectively, in the semis.

Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas went to war, with Djokovic coming out as the victor in straight sets. By bettering his lethal opponent 6-3, 7-6, and 7-6, Djokovic climbed the ranking summit yet again. Tsitsipas’ dream of winning a maiden Grand Slam in the city he calls his second home was shattered.

Tsitsipas’ game on the day succumbed to a man possessed with the idea of reclaiming his throne. And a certain 19-year-old’s dream run came to a close at 20 weeks.
