Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will miss this year’s Wimbledon Championships after not receiving the wildcard she needed to participate in the tournament. The Russian took to social media to announce the same, expressing her disappointment for not getting the chance to play despite making a comeback to tennis after being sidelined for nine months due to injury.

Since returning to professional tennis, Anastasia has been playing brilliantly as her past tournament results indicate. She even reached the quarterfinals of the recently-concluded French Open, where she lost to finalist Karolina Muchova in straight sets with a score of 5-7, 2-6.

Unfortunately, after 9 months of absence last year, I’m not able to enter some tournaments through my ranking and I didn’t receive Wild Cards to play the grass events I was hoping for. Additionally, I already used my two Grand Slam Protected Rankings at the Australian Open and in Roland Garros, meaning that I cannot take part in Wimbledon,” she wrote.

Pablyuchenkova added that now that she can’t participate at Wimbledon, she will be focusing on the clay tournaments in July and will try to qualify for the 2023 US Open main draw as well. “It comes with a big disappointment but I will focus on smaller tournaments in July on clay, prepare the rest season and hopefully climb my way up to the US Open main draw,” she added.

The likes of Venus Williams, Elina Svitolina, Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, Harriet Dart, Katie Swan, and Heather Watson have received the wildcards to enter the main draw of Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Anastasia missing out on the chance has angered tennis fans. They believe that Wimbledon, despite lifting the ban on Russian and Belarusian players is biased against them and hence the grass-court major did not hand the wildcard to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

It’s worth noting that Wimbledon last year banned the participation of Russian and Belarusian players due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Due to this, the world ranking points were snatched from the tournament. This prompted the All England Club to lift the ban this year and allow the players from the two countries to compete as “neutral” athletes.
