Novak Djokovic gave another example of his greatness when he clinched his 4th consecutive Wimbledon title by defeating Nick Kyrgios in the finals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. The win over Kyrgios handed Novak his 7th Wimbledon trophy and his 21st career Grand Slam title. Djokovic won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) n 3 hours and 1 minute.
After going down in the first set, Novak did not waste time in taking control of the second set by going a double break up. While Nick managed to win a break back, it was not enough as Djokovic saved 4 break points in the 9th game of the second set to split the game even. The third set was closely contested but Djokovic prevailed and while the 4th set did go to the tiebreaker, Novak quickly went 5-1 up in the tiebreaker and it was a matter of time before a return by Nick hit the net and fell in his side of the court crowning Novak the champion.

“It took him a while to find his form after Australia”: Goran Ivanisevic on Novak Djokovic

The 2022 season had been a difficult one for Djokovic. Starting with the entire drama in Australia that ended with his deportation, long-time coach Marian Vajda leaving his camp, a quarter-final defeat in the 2022 French Open and confirmation of a complete points deduction of Wimbledon due to the ban, Novak had not had it easy this year. Despite the title defence, Djokovic will be ranked World no. 7 when the rankings are updated.
“You cannot prepare for Kyrgios, he is a genius. We focused on what Novak needed to do. Kyrgios is unpredictable, by far the best serve in the world. It is very emotional. Shit year, tough year. It took him a while to find his form after Australia, lost to Rafa at RG. For me, he was the favourite, but you still need to win. He is at 21 and really deserves it. I never doubted, you don’t doubt people like that. It took him some time, he needed to find peace.
“Some people would never play tennis again if they had to live through what Novak did in Australia. It’s heroic. It was easier with Marian, because now I have 100% of the stress, not 50%, hahaha. It was an honour to work with him,” said Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic who has taken the full-time duties since Vajda’s exit.
Ivanisevic, a former Wimbledon champion also talked about Novak’s situation going into the 2022 US Open as the USA doesn’t permit unvaccinated foreigners, a policy that will make Novak absent from the final Grand Slam of the season. “I am going on vacation, I don’t know until when. Maybe Biden changes his mind. I deserved the vacation,” added Ivanisevic further with comments reported by journalist Sasa Ozmo.
