“It’s better to look good and be in the top 20, than not look good and be number 1” Sorana Cirstea takes a dig at misogynist sponsors
Sorana Cirstea
Sorana Cirstea, the Romanian WTA player made a huge revelation about the kind of comments she had received from her sponsors. As per the tennis star herself, her former brand sponsor Adidas believed that a player’s physical appearance plays a crucial role as their marketing strategy rather than their achievements in their career. She was sponsored by Adidas in the year 2006-2016.
The World No 38 revealed that the executives of the brand spoke about the misogynist remarks that shook her self-belief. She spoke about the claims that good-looking players grab the attention of the audience that works better as a brand instead of being a top ranked player with average looks.
She during a podcast called ‘La Fileu‘ said that “I remember when I had a contract with Adidas. They always told me, considering that I look good for a sportswoman, that – It’s better to look good and be in the top 20, than not look good and be number 1.When you’re in the top 20, however you’re seen, you’re high and there’s a crowd at every tournament“.
Cirstea further defended the brand that it was fairly considerate from their side since the executives had their share of quotas to fill and are answerable to the senior management. She added “So they told me: “It’s better to be beautiful and in the top 20, than… less beautiful and number 1.” You realize, they also have their quotas, it’s a market.“
