Not many would have thought a few years ago that Stan Wawrinka would still be competing at the highest level. He was plagued with injury. The former World No. 3, however, has tried his level best to come back.
Wawrinka has played some good tennis since he returned, but the only thing he still hasn’t been able to win is that all-important trophy. Recently, he made it to the final of Umag. However, the Swiss fell short, and it was a tough pill to swallow.
It’s been six years since Wawrinka has lifted a trophy on the ATP Tour. The last time he did it was back in 2017 when he won the Geneva Open. However, that very year, he played a draining and grueling contest against Andy Murray in the Semi-Finals of the Roland Garros, which saw both players starting an unwanted injury spiral. Since that Geneva title, Wawrinka has made it to three finals, two being in 2019 in Rotterdam and Antwerp.
The most recent one is in Umag. He profusely cried after losing the Umag final against Alex Popyrin in three tough sets (6-7, 6-3, 6-4). When asked about why he was so emotional, the Swiss had this to say on the Tennis Channel, “It’s because I care so much. That’s also why sometimes you get nervous, why you cry after losing a final. If I have 1 goal, it’s to win 1 more trophy before I retire. Of course, it means a lot to be in that final. I was that close. But after, everything is fine & still going in the right direction.”
Wawrinka felt he missed out on a great chance and thus was crying. However, the Swiss is hopeful that he is on the right track in his comeback to winning titles.
Wawrinka gets his Cincinnati Masters off to a great start
Stan Wawrinka has shown glimpses of his old self with some really good performances this year. He is currently playing in Mason, Ohio at the Cincinnati Masters. He showed some solid hard-court tennis in the first round against Brandon Nakashima, where he beat the American in three sets. 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 being the final scoreline. This win will him some great confidence before he moves to the next round.
He will next face another American in the Round of 32 where he faces Frances Tiafoe. That won’t be a straight-forward match for Wawrinka as Tiafoe has played some great tennis in the last few months which has got him to the top 10. Can the Swiss Pro continue a good run? He would love to as the upcoming US Open provided a great opportunity for a deep run.
